Sensory Processing

Sensory processing, or sensory integration, relates to how the brain receives and interprets messages from the environment in order to create meaningful and consistent motor and behavioral responses.

Sensory processing disorder occurs when there is a glitch in how the brain processes sensory information.  It can impact all of your senses and can lead to over and under sensitivity to stimuli.  Common sensory processing struggles include the following:

  • Intolerance of tags on clothing.
  • Intolerance of seams on socks.
  • Difficulties tolerating certain food textures.
  • Everyday sounds seem too loud.
  • Fear of playing on swings.
